The water circulating through the filter is purified in two stages: firstly, debris and large particles are removed with the foam sponge (mechanical filtration), secondly by filling the media container with either carbon (which enhances the purity and clarity of the water) or with ceramic media (for bacterial colonization that controls the nitrate level).
