Check your pH to determine the need for adjustment, as fish waste products tend to constantly acidify the tank water. If the pH setting is appropriate, then…
Use the packaged teaspoon teaspoon and add 1 teaspoon (5 grams) per 25 gallons (95 liters).
Pre-dissolve the measured pH buffer for use in your gallon in 1-2 cups (250-500 mL) of fresh water (either bottled or dechlorinated tap water).
This solution can be blurry.
Add it to your tank water flowing over the surface.
Any resulting turbidity should disappear quickly.
This mixture of buffers is intentionally gentle, so that the increase in target pH within 8.0-8.3 is achieved in 1 or more consecutive applications, 48 hours apart, without exceeding safe limits.
The number of applications depends on the initial pH, the vacuum to achieve your goal, and the existing alkalinity (the balance between bicarbonate, carbonate and hydroxide ions).
As it takes 48 hours +/- to adjust the settings, try the pH again after 8 hours before applying another application.
